What we're learning in

Year One

This half term we will be continuing our daily phonics sessions and the children will be practising their phonics skills for both reading and writing. We will be reading some fantastic stories about different and exciting journeys and will be writing character splats, diaries, stories and fact files. We will continue to concentrate on writing correctly punctuated sentences with simple conjunctions and adjectives and to encourage the children to read back their writing to make sure it makes sense.

We will be focusing on place value to 20 and addition and subtraction to 20. Using our number skills, we will be asking the children to solve simple problems and encouraging them to explain how they reached their answers. We will also be learning to measure height and length in standard and non-standard units.

This half term we will be naming, identifying and grouping materials and talking about the properties of different materials. The children will be taking part in a series of experiments to determine the properties of various materials and to help us to select the correct material to suit a purpose.

We will be learning about London transport in the past. We will be finding out how people got around the city in the past and how this has changed over time and up to the present day.

We will be focusing on drawing and printmaking and will be looking at a variety of printmakers for inspiration.

We will be exploring the dynamics and tempo of different pieces of music.

This term the children will work on gymnastics and dance.

After half term they will learn ball skills and dodgeball.

We will be learning about how to keep ourselves safe. The children will also take part in daily meditation and mindfulness sessions.

We will be building rockets using junk modelling materials which we will test out before launching them across the playground. Before that, the children are going to learn how using a computer can help them with their designs.

We will continue to focus on Christianity and will be learning about friendship. We will be reading some Bible stories and talking about whether it was always easy for Jesus to show friendship.
