In English, we will be using an excellent novel linked to our theme called ‘Children of the Benin Kingdom’ by Dinah Orji. We will recap the features of informal letter writing, perspective diary entries, and narratives using dialogue. We will also be revisiting key grammatical structures, particularly focusing on identifying and using a variety of clause structures independently in our writing.

In Maths we will begin with a final unit on fractions, where the children will apply their knowledge in order to solve reasoning problems. We will then begin a new unit on decimals, making connections with prior knowledge of fractions to deepen understanding. I would like to encourage you to revise all times tables daily and use this to solve long multiplication and division problems. The children are all very familiar with the method, I would just like to minimise small calculation errors that we sometimes see!

In Maths, we will be taking part in some real life maths investigations, to prepare us for secondary school learning.

In Science, we will be learning about electricity and the children will be investigating whether the voltage of the battery affects the volume of the buzzer within a circuit. The children will also continue to develop their scientific enquiry skills with lots of observations, experiments and research.

Science this term is all about animals including humans. The children will seek to answer the question ‘Which type of exercise has the greatest effect on our heart rate?’ They will continue to develop their scientific enquiry skills with lots of observations, experiments and research. In RE we will be studying Christianity. We will focus on the concept of salvation and endeavour to answer the ‘big question’- ‘Is anything ever eternal?’

In Science, we will be learning about light, evolution and inheritance.

In History, we will be exploring Ancient Benin before half term and then taking part in a thematic unit around the concept of Empire.

Our topic for the half term is History and will be completing some really interesting learning about immigration to London. The children will think critically about our big question- ‘How far do you agree with the statement: Since Medieval times, London has welcomed and encouraged migrants?’

In Geography, we will be exploring renewable energies and taking part in some local fieldwork.

Our Art topic this half term will be a unit on printmaking. We will be looking at some fantastic contemporary artists including Lubaina Himid, Khaled Morad and Richard Kimbo, and discussing our opinions of each artist’s work. The children will be building up to creating their own, emotive two-colour print.

In Art, we will be completing a unit on Painting. We will be focussing on the work of some key artists from the contemporary period: Ai Weiwei, Esiri Erheriene-Essi & Tammam Azzam. We will discuss how the work of these artists makes us feel and will discuss what has inspired each piece. The children will try to incorporate some of the stylistic choices and techniques of these artists in their final piece, which will focus on the juxtaposition of beauty and ruin.

In Art, we will exploring Movement by looking at contemporary significant artists such as: Olafur Eliasson, Yi Dai & John Akomfrah.

In Music, we will be learning a range of samba percussion, taught by Kinetica Blocco. We will continue to work on appraising, composition and performance.

In PE, we will be learning basketball, football, hockey and tag rugby.

PE with Michael will continue to be on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons; if the weather is fine, these sessions will be in the playground, so please ensure that your child has appropriate footwear and clothing on these days.

In PE, we will be learning athletics, tennis, cricket and flag football.

In PSHE, we will be exploring:

How does society stigmatise mental health?

How does respect drive change?

In PSHE, we will be answering the question ‘How can we safeguard ourselves outside of school?’ We’ll learn about how stereotypes and misogyny affect society and groups of individuals, how to deal with different types of influences and pressures and also explore different avenues to obtaining money and how these affect your financial profile.

In PSHE, we will be exploring:

What are my options when I leave school?

In Computing, we will begin with a revision of the importance of E-safety. The children will also learn how to research information on the internet safely and effectively and be discerning in evaluating digital content and research. The children will then design and develop their own Year 6 website and look at updating this with key information and events throughout the term.

In Computing, we will be focusing on data handling. The children will learn about the use of big data including barcodes, QR codes, infrared, and RFID technologies. Children will create and scan their own QR codes, manipulate real-time data in spreadsheets, and present their findings.

In Computing we will take part in a skills showcase for Inventing a product.

In RE, we will be studying Sikhism and hoping to answer the question- ‘What is the best way for a Sikh to show commitment to God?’ We will be reflecting on things that we might show commitment to and will learn about the different ways in which a Sikh may choose to show commitment to God.

In RE we will be studying Christianity. We will focus on the concept of salvation and endeavour to answer the ‘big question’- ‘Is anything ever eternal?’

In RE, will be exploring belief in Akhirah (life after death) help Muslims lead good lives?

In Maths we will spend the entire term on number: place value, calculations, number patterns and negative numbers will all be covered. Problem solving and worded problems will also be prominent throughout the term. It is vital that the children are solid with long division and multiplication by the end of this term and know their times table facts; the rest of the year will be very difficult without these things in place, so please talk to me ASAP if you have a concern about this.
