Art

Overview

We highly value Art and Design as an essential part of a broad and balanced curriculum. Our aim is to inspire, engage and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As children progress, they develop critical thinking, a deeper understanding of artistic processes, and an appreciation of how art reflects and shapes culture and history.

How we teach

Art and Design is taught through a carefully planned curriculum that develops skills progressively across drawing, painting, sculpture and other creative techniques. Pupils explore and record their ideas, experiment with materials and processes, and learn to evaluate and analyse artwork using subject-specific language.

Children are introduced to a diverse range of artists, craft makers and designers, helping them understand the historical and cultural contexts of art and design. Teaching encourages creativity, reflection and personal expression at every stage.

Impact

Pupils become confident, creative individuals who can express ideas and emotions through visual media. They develop technical skills, critical awareness and an understanding of the role art plays in society, culture and personal wellbeing.

How you can help at home

Visiting local or national galleries and talking about artwork together helps children develop confidence in expressing opinions and emotions. Creating a sketchbook at home, experimenting with different materials, and exploring techniques such as shading, texture and composition all support artistic development. Giving children space to explore and express themselves creatively is key.

Beyond the classroom

Children have opportunities to extend their creativity through enrichment activities including Art Club, Sketching Club and Sewing Club. Pupils experience first-hand learning through gallery visits, work with local artists and involvement in community art projects such as Huggins Corner, helping them see art as a living and shared experience.
