Physical Education (PE)

Physical Education at Streatham Wells helps children develop confidence, resilience and a lifelong commitment to health and fitness through a wide range of physical activities and sport.

Physical Education (PE)

Overview

Our PE curriculum aims to inspire all pupils to succeed and excel in physical activity, sport and competition. We want children to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to lead healthy, active lives, while building character traits such as resilience, fairness, perseverance and respect. PE supports both physical and mental wellbeing and helps children develop a positive mindset towards challenge.

How we teach

Pupils receive two hours of PE each week, which may include swimming or dance. Lessons use a range of teaching approaches, including whole-class instruction, group work and individual practice, to develop physical skills, knowledge and understanding.

Children are given opportunities to collaborate and compete, reflect on their own performance and learn from others. In the Early Years, physical development is taught through a combination of discrete lessons and continuous provision, supporting the development of balance, coordination, strength and fine and gross motor skills.

Impact

Through PE, pupils develop physical confidence, resilience and self-esteem. They learn to cope with both success and failure in individual and team-based activities, building perseverance and a positive attitude towards challenge. Children leave Streatham Wells with the skills, confidence and understanding needed to make positive choices about their health and wellbeing.

How you can help at home

Supporting your child to understand the rules of organised sports can help build confidence and enjoyment. Encouraging regular physical activity at home, whether through play, exercise or participation in clubs, helps reinforce the foundations of a healthy and active lifestyle.

Beyond the classroom

Children take part in a wide range of sporting opportunities beyond PE lessons, including extra-curricular clubs, lunchtime activities and competitive fixtures. Pupils represent the school in local leagues and festivals, including football competitions and Charter Trust dance events, and the school hosts an annual Sports Day. These opportunities promote teamwork, cooperation and a strong sense of sporting achievement.
