PSHE

PSHE at Streatham Wells equips children with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to stay healthy, build positive relationships and thrive in modern life.

PSHE

Overview

At Streatham Wells, we believe children need strong knowledge and self-awareness to navigate the challenges of life confidently and successfully. Our PSHE curriculum supports pupils to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships, while building resilience, self-efficacy and independence. PSHE plays a central role in helping children become confident, responsible and respectful members of society.

How we teach

PSHE is taught weekly through high-quality, evidence-based and age-appropriate lessons. Our programme is structured around six key strands: mental health, respect for all, citizenship, relationships, goals and dreams, and relationships and sex education (RSHE).

Learning is discussion-based and reflective, giving pupils regular opportunities to explore real-life issues in a safe and supportive environment. PSHE is closely linked to our behaviour policy and wellbeing lessons, ensuring consistency across school life.

Parents have the right to request that their child be withdrawn from some or all sex education delivered as part of statutory RSE. Requests should be made to the Headteacher. Relationships Education is compulsory for all primary pupils.

Impact

Through PSHE, pupils develop the knowledge and skills to keep themselves healthy and safe, understand their emotions and relationships, and know how and when to seek help. They leave Streatham Wells better prepared for the responsibilities and opportunities of adult life, with strong moral awareness, resilience and confidence.

How you can help at home

Talking with your child about their feelings, friendships and experiences helps reinforce PSHE learning. Encouraging reflection through discussion, journalling or shared problem-solving can support emotional wellbeing. Conversations about growing up, relationships and what it means to be a good citizen are especially valuable.

Beyond the classroom

PSHE learning is strengthened through a wide range of enrichment opportunities, including Bikeability and the TfL Stars travel safety programme. Pupils take part in national awareness events such as Anti-Bullying Week, Children’s Mental Health Week, Black History Month and LGBT History Month, and support charities including Comic Relief and Show Racism the Red Card. Leadership opportunities such as School Council, Head Pupils, Digital Leaders and Year 6 Subject Leaders further develop responsibility, confidence and citizenship.
