Spanish

Learning Spanish at Streatham Wells helps children communicate confidently, explore other cultures and understand the world beyond their own community.

Spanish

Overview

Learning a foreign language is a vital part of life in a multicultural society. At Streatham Wells, our Spanish curriculum aims to foster curiosity, cultural understanding and confidence in communication. We want children to become respectful, responsible global citizens who appreciate diversity and can engage positively with the wider world. Early exposure to language supports long-term language learning and contributes positively to achievement across the curriculum.

How we teach

Children formally learn Spanish from Year 3 onwards through structured, progressive lessons. Alongside this, we value the importance of early exposure and provide opportunities for children in Early Years and Key Stage 1 to experience Spanish through songs, rhymes and assemblies.

Teaching focuses on developing listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, while building vocabulary and confidence. Lessons encourage children to practise pronunciation, communicate meaning and develop an understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures.

Impact

Pupils develop confidence in speaking and understanding Spanish, alongside a growing awareness of cultural diversity. They leave Streatham Wells with positive attitudes towards languages, stronger communication skills and a foundation for future language learning.

How you can help at home

Listening to Spanish songs, stories and simple conversations at home helps reinforce learning. Families can also access free Spanish lessons and resources through Oak National Academy

Beyond the classroom

Language learning is enriched through cultural experiences and community events. We celebrate our Spanish-speaking community through termly Spanish Café events, bringing families together to practise language skills and share food and culture. Children also learn about Spanish and Spanish-speaking countries through themed activities, visits to local restaurants and opportunities to use Spanish in real-life contexts.
