Curriculum intent

"To learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world." Chinese Proverb

Learning a foreign language is an important part of being a member of a multi-cultural society and provides an opening to other cultures. Here At Streatham Wells we learn Spanish - it is our intent to provide a high-quality language education, which fosters children’s curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world. It helps our children become good communicators and responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to a global society. We believe that early acquisition of a foreign language facilitates the learning of languages later in life and that can help a child’s achievement across the curriculum. . It also encourages pupils to recognise and celebrate cultural differences and promotes tolerance and community cohesion.

Children formally learn Spanish from year 3 upwards, but we know the power of exposing children to languages early, and so we provide lots of opportunities for our KS1 (year 1and year 2 pupils) and Early Years (Nursery and Reception) pupils to learn Spanish, such as:

  • Spanish assembly for KS1
  • Learning Spanish songs and nursery rhymes

How you can help at home

Exposure to Spanish stories and songs is helpful - you can find many free resources online. There are also home learning resources on the Oak National Academy website, found here: https://classroom.thenational.academy/subjects-by-key-stage/key-stage-2/subjects/spanish

We are proud of our Spanish speaking community and we bring parents, carers and families together once a term for our Spanish Café - a chance to get together, speak in Spanish and enjoy some delicious Spanish food and drink.

We also provide first hand experiences for children in Spanish, such as learning about Spanish and Spanish-speaking country's cultures, enjoying and visiting Spanish restaurants and having opportunities to practice speaking Spanish outside the classroom.
