Curriculum intent

“If you want to understand today you have to search yesterday.” Pearl S. Buck

At Streatham Wells we intend to promote curious historians who garnish their understanding of the past by rigorously analysing primary and secondary sources, using a skeptical eye to develop their own theories and interpretations. We encourage our pupils to think independently, and apply the skills they learn in History to all parts of their wider life, including things they may read, hear or see in their communities or in the media. We achieve this intent by:

  •  structuring each unit through the lens of an inquiry question, allowing each pupil to voice their thoughts and opinions, justified with evidence.
  • offering students the opportunity to address controversial topics with sensitivity and an evaluative edge.
  • developing essential chronological awareness through a sequentially taught curriculum, culminating in two thematic units.
  •  encouraging creativity in the way pupils represent learning, whether through high quality writing, drama, debates and artwork.
  •  creating a diverse curriculum that represents the student body and wider community.
  • ensuring pupils leave with a wealth of rich historical vocabulary that is built up each year.

Our history curriculum is richly diverse and celebrates history, stories and cultures from around the world, encouraging children to think critically about the world around them. We aim to deliver the curriculum in a hands-on way engaging way, making use of experience days, trips, artefact handling and making the most of our diverse local heritage sites.

How you can help at home

We really want pupils to have a strong understanding of chronology so any access to timelines of world or British history will support their conceptual understanding. Understanding why events happened and discussing similarities and differences with other historical events is also really helpful.

We offer a range of opportunities for children to further develop their history skills, such as:

  • Opportunities to learn and celebrate our diverse community such as showcasing work related to and celebrating Black History Month, Disability History Month, South East Asian History Month, LGBTQIA+ History Month
  • First hand experiences such as museum trips, visitors to the school sharing lived experiences, links with the local community
