Computing

Computing at Streatham Wells develops confident, creative and responsible users of technology who are ready to thrive in a digital world.

Computing

Overview

We see computing as a core subject that prepares children to become thinkers of the future. Our curriculum aims to develop computational thinking, creativity and digital literacy, enabling pupils to use technology purposefully as a tool for learning, expression and problem-solving. Alongside this, we teach children to understand the advantages and risks of technology, supporting them to become respectful, responsible and safe digital citizens.

How we teach

Our computing curriculum balances the development of deep knowledge with opportunities to apply skills across a range of digital contexts. Children learn how technology works, how to create digital content and how to code, while applying these skills across the wider curriculum.

Pupils have access to high-quality resources, including laptops, Chromebooks, iPads, micro:bits and digital tools that support collaboration and creativity. Computing is taught both discretely and through meaningful cross-curricular links.

Online safety is embedded throughout computing teaching and is supported by the Education for a Connected World framework, helping pupils build resilience, make informed choices and develop positive online behaviours.

Impact

Pupils become confident, capable users of technology who can think logically, solve problems and express ideas digitally. They understand how to stay safe online and are prepared to engage responsibly with an ever-changing digital world.

How you can help at home

Encourage your child to use technology creatively, such as writing documents, making presentations, filming short videos or creating digital art. Asking your child to explain or teach you how something works helps reinforce learning and develop technical vocabulary. Coding platforms such as Scratch can also support computational thinking at home.

Beyond the classroom

Children have opportunities to extend their computing skills through enrichment activities such as Coding Club and educational visits, including trips to the Science Museum. Our Year 6 Digital Leaders play an active role in promoting e-safety across the school, supporting peers and contributing to a positive digital culture at Streatham Wells.
