History

History at Streatham Wells develops curious, critical thinkers who explore the past to better understand the world today.

History

Overview

We aim to promote curious historians who question, analyse and interpret the past using evidence. Our curriculum encourages pupils to think independently, develop their own interpretations and apply historical thinking to the world around them, including what they read, see and hear in their communities and the media.

How we teach

History is taught through carefully structured enquiry questions that invite discussion, debate and evidence-based thinking. Pupils analyse primary and secondary sources, explore different perspectives and tackle complex or sensitive topics with care and respect.

Learning is sequenced to build strong chronological understanding over time, supported by a rich and diverse curriculum that reflects our school community and the wider world. Children are encouraged to represent their learning creatively through writing, drama, debate and artwork, while developing a growing bank of historical vocabulary.

Impact

Pupils develop a secure sense of chronology, strong analytical skills and the confidence to question and interpret historical evidence. They leave Streatham Wells with a deeper understanding of the past, an appreciation of diverse histories and cultures, and the ability to think critically about the world around them.

How you can help at home

Supporting your child’s understanding of chronology through timelines of British and world history can strengthen their historical thinking. Talking about why events happened, and discussing similarities and differences between historical periods, also helps deepen understanding.

Beyond the classroom

History learning is enriched through first-hand experiences such as museum visits, visitors sharing lived experiences and links with the local community. Pupils also take part in events and learning linked to Black History Month, Disability History Month, South East Asian History Month and LGBTQIA+ History Month, celebrating the diversity of history and stories that shape our world.
