Science

Science at Streatham Wells nurtures curiosity, enquiry and a sense of awe about the world, helping children understand how things work through investigation and discovery.

Science

Overview

Our science curriculum aims to ensure all children are excited, curious and confident about the world around them. We want pupils to ask questions, explore ideas and develop a deep understanding of scientific concepts, while building the skills they need to think and work like scientists. Science supports children to become informed, curious and thoughtful learners.

How we teach

Science is taught in line with the National Curriculum, with carefully planned progression across year groups. Key topics are revisited over time with increasing depth and challenge, allowing children to build and secure understanding.

Lessons emphasise working scientifically, with regular opportunities for practical investigation, fair testing and enquiry. Children use a range of data, including graphs, statistics, images and observations, to test hypotheses and draw conclusions. Clear progression in scientific skills ensures pupils become accurate, careful and confident practical scientists.

Impact

Pupils develop strong scientific knowledge alongside enquiry skills such as observation, investigation, analysis and evaluation. They become confident in asking and answering scientific questions, applying their learning to real-world contexts and approaching new challenges with curiosity and independence.

How you can help at home

Encourage curiosity by talking about how things work and exploring everyday science together. Simple activities such as taking apart broken objects, discussing materials and processes, or researching answers to questions can deepen understanding. Exploring ideas together and using trusted resources helps reinforce scientific thinking at home.

Beyond the classroom

Science learning is enriched through clubs, enrichment activities and first-hand experiences. Pupils visit a range of scientific and environmental sites, including museums, gardens and institutes, and take part in events such as Science Week. Our partnership with the Ogden Trust further enhances physics learning, including specialist opportunities such as an annual space camp.
