Music

Overview

We believe music is a powerful language that connects children to themselves and others. Our curriculum aims to develop musical understanding, creativity and confidence, while fostering a lifelong love of music. Through exposure to a wide range of musical styles, cultures and traditions, children learn to appreciate music’s emotional, social and intellectual value.

How we teach

We provide a broad, balanced and progressive music curriculum that develops musical knowledge, skills and understanding over time. Lessons are carefully planned to introduce and revisit musical concepts, enabling children to discuss, appraise and perform music using the interrelated dimensions of music.

Music teaching is supported by specialist teachers from Lambeth Music Service and Kinetika Bloco, and children have opportunities to learn a range of tuned and untuned instruments, including percussion, recorder, flute, trumpet, trombone and euphonium. Regular opportunities to perform and reflect on music help build confidence and musical fluency.

Impact

Pupils develop confidence in performing, listening and appraising music, alongside a growing understanding of different genres and traditions. Music supports children’s personal development, creativity and self-expression, helping them communicate ideas and emotions in meaningful ways.

How you can help at home

Listening to a wide range of music at home helps build musical awareness and understanding. Families may also wish to explore concerts and performances locally and beyond, including family events at the Southbank Centre:

Beyond the classroom

Children benefit from a wide range of musical enrichment opportunities, including peripatetic lessons in guitar, piano and recorder, singing programmes such as The Louder I Sing, and performance opportunities including choir, musical theatre and dance clubs. Pupils take part in special projects such as the VOCES8 singing experience and annual musical productions performed in London theatres. First-hand experiences of professional performances, including concerts and pantomime, further enrich pupils’ musical journeys.
