Maths

Mathematics at Streatham Wells develops confident, fluent problem-solvers who understand maths as a vital skill for life.

Maths

Overview

We aim for all children to leave Streatham Wells with high standards of numeracy and a deep understanding of mathematics. Our curriculum builds strong, secure mathematical structures that enable pupils to reason, make connections and tackle increasingly complex problems with confidence. We believe children are most successful when they enjoy mathematics, experience success and understand its relevance to the world around them.

How we teach

We teach mathematics through a mastery approach, using the concrete–pictorial–abstract model to support deep understanding. Lessons emphasise problem solving, reasoning and mathematical communication, with pupils encouraged to explain their thinking both verbally and in writing.

We follow the White Rose Maths scheme of work, which provides a carefully sequenced curriculum that supports conceptual understanding and progression. This approach ensures that all pupils, regardless of starting point, are supported to achieve their full potential.

Impact

Pupils develop fluency, confidence and resilience in mathematics. They are able to reason mathematically, solve problems independently and apply their knowledge across a range of contexts. Strong outcomes reflect pupils’ secure understanding and positive attitudes towards maths.

How you can help at home

You can support your child by talking positively about maths, practising key skills together and exploring real-world maths in everyday life. From Year 2, children use Times Table Rock Stars to build fluency and confidence with multiplication facts.

Beyond the classroom

Children are offered opportunities to deepen their mathematical thinking through enrichment activities and challenges, including competitions such as the Money-Wise Challenge. Pupils also benefit from external links that stretch and inspire learning, including partnerships that connect mathematics with science and problem solving beyond the classroom.
